portrait of Javier Tejada

Javier Tejada Palacios (January 6, 1948, Castejón, Navarra) is a physicist and scientist specializing in quantum magnetism. He is currently (2020) Emeritus Professor of Condensed Matter Physics at the Faculty of Physics of the University of Barcelona.

Professor Javier Tejada's life-long achievements in magnetism are widely known throughout the world. In 1990s he co-authored a series of works that reported first observation of the resonant spin tunneling in a molecular magnet. Nature magazine called it one of the most remarkable discoveries in spin physics in a century. It has become the basis for quantum computation schemes based upon single-molecule magnets. Prof. Tejada's other remarkable achievement is the discovery of quantum magnetic deflagration (2005) -- propagating front of burning magnetic energy similar to chemical combustion. His is also known for observation of the correlated spin glass phase of an amorphous magnet, spin tunneling in single-domain particles, and quantum tunneling of vortices and interfaces in superconductors. In recent years he has done remarkable work on practical problems that include microwave spectroscopy of metallic stents for cardiology applications and terahertz study of the authenticity of paintings for art museums. During his tenure at the University of Barcelona Professor Tejada supervised dozens of doctoral students (34) that are now occupying leading positions in academia and industries.

Energía y empleo: lo posible y lo imposible

Eugene Chudnovsky, Oriol Tejada, Javier Tejada  |  El País  |  17/02/2016

Curator of the exhibition Numbers versus humanity

Curator of the exhibition Numbers versus humanity

5/2/2018  |  Gisme

In this exhibition we show the importance that the number has in all disciplines of knowledge and human activities. The numbers appeared 5,000 years ago even before the language and writing. It is very possible that millions years before Lucy had already looked to the sky to contemplate the sun (the one) the star (the two) and the stars (many). Since the appearance of numbers  humanity has become a very complex set of people whose behaviors are analyzed using algorithms based on numerical information. The curious thing about all this, is that if life fits a series of numbers with a small margin of error, it turns out that at present , the future of humanity lies in the numerical value of a series of big questions that we have raised and that are intimately related to their past, present and future. In other words, the sustainable future of humanity can be analyzed from the numerical information of several parameters related to all human activities. That is why our exhibition, which will recreate the number in all disciplines of human knowledge, is intertwined with the so-called Sustainable Development Goals of the UN, which, well analyzed, are fundamentally numbers associated  to each objective: zero hunger, the numbers of our energy reserves, the number of inhabitants and their future projection, the city and rural areas, livestock and agriculture, the environment and climate change, etc.

In our exhibition there are panels that explain the appearance and history of the number, the numbers of human knowledge in law, economics, journalism, agriculture, livestock, physics, chemistry, geology, biology, transport ("mobility"), ecology,  population in rural areas and cities, distribution of wealth, energy consumption by economic sectors, numbers of life, etc. There are also placed a series of projectors that send information from different global number counters in real time: world population, water consumption, energy reserves, energy produced and consumed, aging of the population, emigration, deaths due to wars, accidents, diseases, environmental pollution, car production, books sold, number of people connected to the internet at every moment, numbers of emails sent per minute per day, deforestation, CO2 pollution, number of undernourished people, number of obese people, etc.

2.- The exhibition consists of 20 panels and each panel contains, on average, 14 cartoons. All the information we show has been verified by specialists  and many of the cartoons have a totally original design. Among the cartoons are projected a set of numbers that come from accountants who in real time report everything that happens worldwide
